Day 18, Monday, San Sebastian

We didn’t need to check out until 12:00, so I went for a walk down to the beach, sat around, drank coffee and did emails. We had only 50km to travel today to San Sebastian, calling in at Saint Jean de Luz and Hendaye on the way. I’d never heard of San Sebastian until the ABC showed Rick Stein’s “Spain” in 2012. The first episode ended in San Sebastian, and showed it from the air, on a clear day, with the sparkling bay, the beaches, the island. Where’s that?  We have to go there! Day 17, Sunday, Biarritz

This morning we were to pick up our lease car near Bordeaux Airport at 10am. The thought of dragging suitcases to a bus stop, riding for an hour to the airport then finding the rendezvous point was quite dispiriting. I tried the Uber app on my phone and it worked perfectly. The driver picked us up punctually at our door and delivered us to the location by 09:15. It was quite a long way. Like many Uber drivers, he was highly educated and had an interesting background. Day 16, Saturday, Bordeaux

We slept in this morning. It was a combination of fatigue, the one hour time change, no deadline for breakfast,  and the almost absolute silence in the apartment. I opened one of the double glazed windows facing the street and the sudden entry of the sounds from the street outside was like turning on a radio.
